PUF Panel and Door — Thermal Insulation for Cold Storage, Food Processing and Pharma Environments

Cold storage facilities, blast freezers, pharmaceutical controlled-temperature warehouses, and food processing clean rooms require a thermal envelope — walls, ceilings, and floors — that maintains the required internal temperature with minimum heat gain from the external environment. The thermal performance of this envelope determines the operating cost (energy consumption) of the refrigeration system and the ability to maintain product quality within specification. PUF (polyurethane foam) sandwich panels are the global standard construction system for this envelope.

PUF Panel Construction

IFES PUF panels consist of three layers: two outer steel skins (galvanised steel, stainless steel, or pre-painted steel in a range of colours and surface profiles) bonded to a rigid polyurethane foam core injected under pressure to fill the full panel cavity without voids. The foam adheres chemically to the steel skins — no mechanical fasteners or adhesives are needed to maintain the composite structure. The result is a panel with exceptional structural rigidity, thermal performance, and moisture resistance.

Thermal performance: Polyurethane foam has one of the lowest thermal conductivities of any practical insulation material (approximately 0.022–0.025 W/m·K). Panel thicknesses from 60 mm to 200 mm provide U-values from approximately 0.35 W/m²K down to 0.10 W/m²K, covering the full range from chilled storage (+2°C) to blast freezing (-40°C).

PUF Panel Door

The PUF panel door matches the wall panel system: same foam core thickness, same outer skin material and colour, same overall panel profile. This ensures the door contributes the same thermal resistance as the wall at every access opening, maintaining the temperature integrity of the cold room envelope. Peripheral sealing is provided by a full-perimeter magnetic gasket (for small openings and walk-in cold rooms) or a compression gasket (for industrial cold stores). A bottom threshold seal eliminates floor-level air infiltration. A heater strip on the door frame prevents condensation and ice formation at the door perimeter in freezer applications.

Door Hardware

Cam-lock handle or swing handle for manual closure and sealing. Full 180-degree hinges for wide opening access. Safety interior release (panic latch) to prevent accidental entrapment — mandatory for walk-in cold rooms. Sliding door variant available for wide openings and forklift access in industrial cold stores. Electric or pneumatic door heaters for freezer door gaskets.
