Acoustic Fire Door — 120-Minute Fire Resistance with Combined Acoustic Insulation

In many building applications, a door opening must simultaneously satisfy two independent performance requirements: fire resistance (to contain fire and smoke for a specified period) and acoustic insulation (to limit sound transmission between spaces). Conventionally, these requirements have been addressed by separate door products — a fire door on one side and an acoustic door on the other, or a door with acoustic performance that does not meet fire rating requirements. The IFES acoustic fire door resolves this by combining both functions in a single certified assembly.

Construction

The door frame is manufactured from hardwood in a 140×90 mm profile — significantly deeper than a standard fire door frame, providing the necessary rebate depth and mass for both fire and acoustic performance. The shutter is 77 mm thick — again substantially thicker than a standard fire door — with a composite core engineered for both fire resistance and sound attenuation.

The sealing system is critical to acoustic performance and is the most complex element of the assembly:

• Special astragal seal — seals the meeting stile on double-leaf assemblies against both sound transmission and fire/smoke passage
• Perimeter intumescent and acoustic seals — four-side sealing covering the full leaf perimeter against the frame rebate
• Mortise drop-down automatic bottom seal — activates as the door closes, dropping a blade seal to the threshold to eliminate the gap that conventional door seals cannot address

Fire Rating

The IFES acoustic fire door achieves 120-minute fire resistance as tested and rated per BS:476 Part 22. This is the highest standard fire rating available and satisfies NBC 2016 requirements for high-rise stairwells, lift lobbies, and other critical compartmentation points, while also meeting the acoustic separation requirements of the building.

Applications

Hotel guest room corridor doors, hospital ward doors, recording studio entrance doors, broadcast facility control room doors, performing arts rehearsal room doors, boardroom and executive office doors, and any opening where a single door must meet both fire compartmentation and acoustic separation performance criteria.

Hardware

Supplied with three SS ball-bearing butt hinges, EN-rated overhead door closer, full perimeter sealing system as described above, and optional mortise lock or panic bar. Vision panel available with acoustic and fire-rated glass.
