Fire Rated Glass and Glazed Fire Doors

Architects want daylight and sightlines through fire compartments. Fire rated glass makes that possible without breaking the compartment line — provided the glass, the frame, the beads and the gasket are supplied and tested as one system. Fire rated glass fitted into an ordinary frame is not a fire rated assembly, and it will not pass inspection.

Integrity and insulation

Two different performance classes are routinely confused. Integrity-only glass holds flame and hot gases back but transmits radiant heat, so it cannot be used where people must pass close to it during escape. Insulated glass limits heat transmission as well, and is what you need for escape corridors and stair enclosures. We will tell you which class your application actually requires.

Products in this range

  • Glazed fire doors in FD60 and FD120, single and double leaf.
  • Fire door with vision panel — from a small observation pane to a full-height sidelight.
  • Glazed fire doors with partition, for reception and lobby screens that must remain a compartment wall.
  • Fire rated fixed panels and butt-jointed glass screens with minimal framing.

Where it is specified

Hospital corridors where staff need line of sight into wards, atrium and lobby screens, office fire lobbies, control rooms, and stair enclosures in buildings where a solid door would make the escape route feel unsafe.

Documentation

Each glazed assembly is supplied with the test evidence for the complete system — glass, frame and seal — in the form your fire consultant and fire officer will expect.
