What Is IS 3614?

IS 3614 is the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specification for fire check doors. It is published in two parts — Part I covers general requirements, materials, and construction, while Part II defines performance requirements and test methods for fire resistance. Doors manufactured and tested to this standard may carry the ISI Mark, indicating conformity assessed and licensed by BIS.

Why ISI Mark Matters

India's fire safety enforcement landscape has tightened considerably since the Uphaar Cinema tragedy (1997) and subsequent amendments to the NBC. Today, fire NOC authorities in most states and municipal bodies explicitly require ISI-marked fire doors for building occupancy certificates. Specifying a non-ISI door — even an imported one — creates compliance risk and can jeopardise insurance claims in the event of a fire loss.

The Certification Process

Obtaining ISI Mark for fire doors is rigorous. A manufacturer must:

  1. Establish a factory quality system meeting BIS factory inspection criteria
  2. Submit representative door samples for third-party fire testing at a BIS-recognised lab (CBRI Roorkee is the primary facility in India)
  3. Pass the furnace test as per IS 3614 Part II without integrity or insulation failure within the rated period
  4. Undergo periodic surveillance inspections and random sample testing by BIS

This process ensures that every door bearing the ISI Mark is not a one-off prototype — it represents a consistently manufactured product backed by ongoing quality surveillance.

What to Check When Buying

Always ask your supplier for:

  • The BIS licence number printed on the ISI Mark
  • The test certificate from CBRI or other BIS-recognised lab
  • Confirmation that the door leaf and frame are part of the certified assembly — a certified leaf with an uncertified frame fails the assembly test

IFES Certification

Indian Fire Equipment Systems holds an active BIS licence under IS 3614 for steel fire doors in both FD60 and FD120 ratings. Our manufacturing facility is subject to regular BIS audits, and our products are tested at CBRI Roorkee. We supply doors with individual ISI marking and full documentation for your NOC and compliance files.
