The Material Choice in Fire Doors
When specifying fire doors, architects and project managers often face the question: steel or timber? Both materials can achieve certified fire ratings, but they differ significantly in durability, lifecycle cost, maintenance requirements, and suitability for different environments.
Steel Fire Doors
Construction
Steel fire doors consist of a galvanised cold-rolled steel outer skin, typically 0.8–1.2 mm thick, enclosing a rock wool or vermiculite board core. The frame is formed steel, welded or mechanically fastened. Intumescent and smoke seals are factory-fitted into rebates.
Advantages
- Durability: Resistant to impact, forced entry, and humidity — ideal for industrial, basement, and high-traffic areas
- Low maintenance: No warping, swelling, or rotting; powder coat finish resists corrosion
- Higher ratings: Steel doors consistently achieve FD120 and above; wooden doors rarely exceed FD60 in certified form
- Lower lifecycle cost: Higher first cost but significantly lower cost over time
- Security: Inherently more resistant to break-in attempts
Limitations
- Heavier — requires robust frame fixing and quality butt hinges
- Industrial aesthetic — may not suit premium interior design without cladding
Timber Fire Doors
Construction
Fire-rated timber doors use solid engineered timber cores (e.g., laminated veneer lumber) or hollow-core variants with fire-retardant infill. They are typically veneered or painted and fitted with intumescent strips and smoke seals.
Advantages
- Aesthetics: Warm, natural appearance suitable for hotels, residences, and high-end offices
- Lighter weight: Easier to handle and self-close smoothly
- Acoustic performance: Often better sound attenuation than steel
Limitations
- Susceptible to moisture — can swell, warp, or delaminate in humid environments
- Lower impact resistance — vulnerable in high-traffic or industrial settings
- Maximum rating typically FD60 for ISI-certified products in India
- Higher maintenance requirement over time

For industrial plants, basements, parking areas, plant rooms, and any area requiring FD120 — specify steel. For hotel corridors, residential apartments, and office interiors where aesthetics matter and FD60 is sufficient — timber is a viable option.
